Multivariate statistical analysis of non-agricultural business activity of farmers in the European Union Members States

Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the study is to analyses the non-agricultural business activity of agricultural holdings in Poland compared to other European Union countries. The farmers' economic activity has been investigated in terms of the specificity of the agricultural holdings, its spatial and time diversity. The level of enterprise of agricultural holdings in the EU and in Poland in the period from 2003 to 2009 has been analyzed. The predominant forms of non agricultural activity have been indicated. Countries where the nonagricultural activity conducted by agricultural holdings is most diversified have been indicated in the ranking. The biggest diversified in terms of non-agricultural activity were observed in Estonia, where farmers were mainly handicrafts and wood processing. By contrast, in Sweden. Slovenia. Poland and Lithuania, additional activity was mainly contractual work and processing of agricultural products. A relationship between farm size and type of non-agricultural activities undertaken.
