Behind-the-Scenes of Nicolae Ceausescu’s Rise to the Top

Summary/Abstract: Unraveling the mechanisms whereby Nicolae Ceausescu acceded to the top party position after Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej’s death in March 1965 is still a topical concern of the scientific milieus in Romania, giving rise to speculations. Accounts in the memoirs published after 1990 revealed details known only to a few insiders of the Romanian party and state leadership. In this connection, currently it is unanimously believed that it was Ion Gheorghe Maurer who played the key role in Nicolae Ceausescu’s ascent. The document published here, i.e. the letter Gh. Apostol wrote on July 30, 1970, sent to Nicolae Ceausescu on November 9, 1970, casts fresh light on the circumstances in which Ceausescu was elected to head the party.
