Summary/Abstract: Companies and organizations should be focused on developing new products and innovations. Only such have a chance to compete on today's competitive market . The first part of the publication presents the current state of development of innovative activities in particular provinces divided into product and process innovation among industrial and service companies. Westpomeranian region ranks last in those classifications. The second part of the article presents proposed tools to be used by the region in die years 2014 — 2020 in order to reduce disparities in comparison with the leaders of the ranking. A confrontation of European countries in terms of product and process innovation among industrial and services companies is also presented, but Poland is ranked the bottom of the ranking. The tool that will be instrumental in strengthening the process of innovative activities in Poland in the coming years will be the Operational Programme of Smart Development.
