Summary/Abstract: In this article we approach the issue of semantics and translation intertwining, focusing on an important facet of this complex relationship: the problem of synonymy in the translation of medical texts. We wish to cover some essential aspects of synonymy in general, and apply this amount of theoretical information on medical texts. We have made a selection of English texts from the field of anaesthesiology, we have built up a corpus by selecting the words which imply a choice between synonyms when translating the text into Hungarian. We wish to present the peculiarities semantic equivalence may have in medical translation.
