Staff of social welfare houses in view of the risk of professional burnout

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyze the risk of professionalburnout in the staff of social welfare houses (DPS). In theintroductory part some theories of burnout, the specificity of thesyndrome, as well as the characteristics of the operation of socialwelfare houses in the context of their employees’ burnout riskare given. The experimental study included 83 people employedin the DPS in Lower Silesia and Greater Poland. The results indicatesignificant differences in the burnout of women and men.Women exhibit higher levels of emotional exhaustion, and men –depersonalization. Respondents derive average satisfaction fromlife, in most cases report negative atmosphere at work, and receiveinadequate social support. The respondents primarily use copingstyles focused on avoidance, and – to a lesser extent – focusedon emotions. In addition, they also use coping strategies based onemotions and avoidance behaviors, often reaching for alcohol anddrugs.
