Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the question of the possible presentation of childhood ideologies in contemporary picturebooks for children. It attempts to show the work of discourses and ideologies of childhood (the child as a „sweet creature”, childhood as a pre-human condition, and childhood with political and ethical potentiality), as well as a variety of ways in which cultural taboos are tackled in contemporary picturebooks for children. The research was based on an analysis of both the contents and the form of books illustrating specific ideologies and their relation with the taboo, as well ascritical discourse analysis, facilitating the presentation of various ways in which taboos are maintained, omitted, or broken in picturebooks created for children.
