“Strong Programme” And “Empirical Programme Of Relativism” In The Sociology Of Science

Summary/Abstract: Strong Programme (David Bloor) and Empirical Programme of Relativism (Harry Collins) are well known alternatives to Merton’s sociology of science, which can be labeled as the “Weak Programme”. The main difference between Merton’s and Bloors’s programmes is that Merton never tried to explain the content of scientific knowledge by appealing to social factors. The article discusses various objections to relativistic sociology of scientific knowledge and concludes that oversocial concep- tions of science are not tenable.
