Summary/Abstract: In the context of European changes, which mean a fast inclusion into the plural- istic, multicultural and multilingual European society, in this paper, the authors focus on interculturality, as a new concept in the European educational space, showing the im- portance of the school course in Civic Education and in promoting democratic values, multicultural education and the strategies of intensifying intercultural communication. Special attention is devoted to the intercultural dimension of the goals and tasks of Civic Education, as well as to their operational values and realizations in the light of scientific research results. The research that has been undertaken, both theo- retical and empirical, has enabled the understanding of the intercultural aspect of teaching Civic Education in the secondary schools on the territory of the Republic of Serbia from the teachers’ point of view. The research findings include scientific veri- fication of theoretical concepts and practical approaches in the preparation and reali- zation of the Civic Education in our environment, regarding acquiring knowledge, ac- cepting skills necessary for co-living in multicultural communities (tolerance, dia- logue, understanding and accepting differences, etc.), and in addition, the civic en- gagement in the community (critical thinking, activeness, solidarity), as well as the development of different competences – communicational, social, leadership coop- erative, and so on. It is to be concluded that the role of the teacher, in intercultural education, is essential, and therefore, it is necessary to guide their professional development and understanding of the different cultural patterns and the understanding of the dynamics of the intercultural communication.
