Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the potential development of human music and language cognitive faculties by Darwinian evolution. With regard to this problem two groups of positions are found in the literature: radical, claiming that the two faculties themselves are classic examples of evolutionary adaptation, and moderate, according to which the two faculties only emerged based on some other, more fundamental evolutionary ad- aptations. The author suggests that the research of potential formal, neurological, and developmental connections between the two faculites may help bring the two dispa- rate positions closer. In that context, the paper analyses recursion, group membership, and propagation of connotations as important constructs which can help shed addi- tional light on the origins of language and music.
