Summary/Abstract: The work of the American political scientist Robert Dahl is definitely a landmark in contemporary democratic theory. Relying on the absolute need of including both the empirical and normative dimensions in political theory, Dahl develops an operational definition of democracy as polyarchy, which may be used to conceptualize democratization and, at the same time, to conduct a critical analysis of the political process occurring in advanced democracies.
