ARCHIVAL ACTIVITIES IN THE ZENICA-DOBOJ CANTON

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper was to provide basic information about the state of archival activities in the area of Zenica-Doboj Canton. Zenica-Doboj Canton has a total of 12 municipalities with over 400,000 inhabitants. Current records and archival material from these municipalities until 1992. was subject of treatment by three archival institutions (Travnik, Sarajevo, Doboj). Given the new administrative structure of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federation, archival legislation has changed, as well as jurisdiction of individual archives. This Canton got the Law of archives and other supporting documents during 2006. but there has not been an institution of the Archive of Zenica-Doboj canton. Possible reasons for this situation is the lack of funding in the budget of the canton and the absence of a clear vision, strategy and human resources with which to begin the process of building the archive and all ancillary services.It is interesting to mention the fact that the Cantonal Assembly only at September 2010. adopted the study of socio-economic justification for starting an archive. In this document, again, no details were specified, like possible location or locations for the archives building, professional staff with the necessary level of expertise to work as archivists, etc.Still, we hope that at least until second half of upcoming, year 2012., Zenica-Doboj Canton will finally get the institution of the Archive.
