Summary/Abstract: Cieśliński analyses the successive editions of the Polish News Reel (1956-1970) from the point of view of the changing relationships between film and politics. Ciesliński points out moments in the style of PKF’s political cinema in the days of Stalin’s Socialist Realism and a period of Gierek’s propaganda of success. They were characterized by a particularly strong ideological influence and a greater diversification of means of expression when ideological goals receded into the background. The author traces the way in which the atmosphere of struggle and mobilization, subordinated to Socialist Realism dogmas in art, began to relax; new themes whose poetics and content differed from solemnity and alertness began to appear; so did humorous tones; profiles of working class-heroes were replaced by portraits of ordinary men, and observation of the negative aspects of everyday life became a new field of interest. Ciesliński analyses in detail changes in the selection of shots, filming techniques, of the subject matter, content and tone of commentary.
