Summary/Abstract: Elia Kazan is seen as a controversial artist; on the one hand he is regarded as a director of masterpieces, but on the other hand he is remembered as a “friendly witness” in the 1950s when Hollywood was politically infiltrated by the Senator Joseph McCarthy committee. There is no doubt Kazan was an individualist who had always fought for freedom in the cinema. Misiak shows the artistic road of the director, his problems with censorship, demonstrating in this way the paradox of democracy and American culture.
