Summary/Abstract: We encounter the past at every turn. It is seen in literature, art, architecture, natural monuments, but also in our knowledge or in the language that we use and that evolves all the time. What was the present not long ago, tomorrow will be history. And it is only up to us what will last and what will be forgotten. Hence, memory is the factor that records, and sometimes „gives immortality to” things. It is for this reason that defining kinds and types of memory has become so important. Memory of the nation will be manifested in a different way from memory of the region (local memory), and memory of the family in a still different way. However, irrespective of its range and form, each of the mentioned kinds of memory is the most lasting monument – evidence of the past – of a nation, region, family… Hence the family, school, education and cultural institutions and the media have a great role in preserving the past. It is they that, to a large degree, form every man's identity…
