Summary/Abstract: The text in the theatre is a specific rationale. There is no encoded interpretation behind it, thus each staging of the same text that translates the initial project into other theatre means of expression must appear to be like writing the text again, with different accents, meanings, etc. The paper is concerned with situations when the text is subject to some changes which are forced by the system. On the one hand, it relates to systems which are external towards the theatre — the system of political power and censorship, on the other hand, it concerns the complex impact of systems whose element is the theatre in a given aesthetic situation, defined i.a. by theatre organisation, aesthetic convention, the viewer’s perceptive capacity. That issue will be presented by example of the national German theatre at the end of the 18th century and compared with the corresponding phase of the development of the Polish theatre.
