Summary/Abstract: The paper develops the ideas of A. Podgórecki who underlined the muckraking functions of sociology. We show that these ideas account accurately, as confirmed by best research and writing practices of a number of sociologists of repute, for the essential aim of the discipline, which should be understood as an emancipatory effort undertaken to liberate human thinking from the realm of explicit nonsense, miasmas of ideological doctrines or ‘obvious obviousness’. In the word of ‘social construction of reality’ this function of sociology seems even more important than other benefits that the discipline may bring.
