Efficiency of public expenditure on health care in the European Union countries

Summary/Abstract: Health is a component of human capital which is considered the most important factor in the economic development. Investments in this capital increase wealth, accelerate the civilization’s progress and enlarge the competitiveness of the country in the international exchange. Thus, concern for the physical and mental health of the society belongs to the most important tasks of the state and public finance. The aim of this study is assessing efficiency of health expenditure across EU countries using a nonparametric method of Data Envelopment Analysis. Finally, the study distinguishes six “old” and five “new” EU members as most efficient.
