Summary/Abstract: The essay deals with the differences between Croce and Gentile regarding the origin of their political thought before fascism. In his youth Croce was a liberal leftist, politically close to socialism. When Umberto I was killed he justified the murder talking of Bava Beccaris’s repression. His cultural model was a modernist one. On the contrary Gentile put forward a conservative social vision. He was afraid of the labour moviment. In the beginning of first word war, Gentile was facsinated by interventionist rethoric: on the contrary Croce criticize it.
