Summary/Abstract: De Gaulle at the head of the French resistance against the Nazis and after the war, he defended the sovereignty of France against the idea of a supranational Europe. De Gaulle at first opposed to a united Europe and the design of a Defence Community, then became its promoter, as he saw in a united Europe the mean to achieve the interests of France, through the project for a third force, between the United States and the Soviet Union. De Gaulle, worried that the EEC could lose its independence and become a satellite of the United States, sought a closer alliance between France and Germany, through the Fouchet Plan, in order to weaken the relationship between the European Community and the United States and create French primacy in European political cooperation. But with the advance of a supranational Europe, De Gaulle began the period of the Empty Chair. After the output of de Gaulle, the leaders of the EEC, designed a new path to realize the economic, political and military integration of Europe.
