Summary/Abstract: Unemployment, while affecting particulars, is far from having solely an individual dimension. Starting from the unemployed themselves, it brings other, more far-reaching consequences. The repercussions of unemployment are felt at the social macro and micro level by the families of the jobless. Considering such a wider impact of the consequences of unemployment, especially for the family life, it may seem that the State policy towards the unemployed, and more particularly the social allowance schemes, should take into account the family standing. The comparison of the legislation applicable in European countries reveals that the periods for which the allowance is granted are extended, the value of the allowance itself increases, and that additional payments are made in consideration of the number of family members for whom subsistence means need to be ensured. At present, in Poland only a small percentage of the jobless draw an unemployment benefit. According to the applicable legislation 3, the period of entitlement will depend on the family situation solely in rigorously defined cases, and in fact the majority of family categories have not been covered by the said legislative provisions.
