Summary/Abstract: This study analyses the Soviet art discourses existing in the historiography of Soviet Lithuanian art studies. The aim is to question the nonconformity discourse prevailing in the studies of the Soviet art and a way of thinking based on binary schemes about the art of this period. It is pursued to tackle the question of how much the Lithuanian Soviet modernism problematics has been studied and to identify aspects that allow us to broaden the understanding of this phenomenon. To this end, the study focused on the following three issues: the binary schemes “official-unofficial” art, the factual data collection, and the context facilitating innovative understanding of the art of the Soviet period. Vincas Kisarauskas, the most prominent and influential artist of that era, is an example clearly demonstrating the need to identify methodological breakthrough in the Soviet art studies.
