Summary/Abstract: After realizing that he has been living his whole life in denial, Franz-Josef Murau, the main character of Bernhardsř novel, decides to confront his familyřs Nazi past by writing his ŘExtinctionř in the form of an autobiographical testimony. The narrator dissects his familyřs history and does not hesitate to reveal his deep aversion towards his relatives, which is representative for him still being trapped in the past. To which extent does Murau succeed in overcoming the traumatic experiences that left their marks on his present life and how does he deal with the poisoned legacy inherited from his family are some questions this study is aiming to answer to.
