Summary/Abstract: This article presents the causes of the rivalry and collaboration between Russiandiplomats in Japan and their colleagues from Western states. The comparison of thework of Russian consuls and ministers with the work of diplomats from Europe andthe United States of America gives us an opportunity to understand the true goals ofRussian Empire’s policy in the Far East. Interpersonal relations between diplomatsfrom different countries in Japan are also discussed.
