Summary/Abstract: In line with the assumption that the Catholic Church is (still) an underestimated but salient transnational religious actor, the text examines Pope Francis’ Messages Urbi et Orbi. Similarly to other papal speeches, they have received little academic attention to date. As for its theoretic-methodological underpinnings, the text draws upon Norman Fairclough’s approach to critical discourse analysis (CDA) and employs some parts of his analytical framework to reveal a mental map charted through Francis’ Urbi et Orbi. It is a map of insuffi cient human dignity showing both certain international evidences of and a religious solution to the inadequate dignity of human beings. In its conclusion, the text points to power elements in the present Pope’s mental map.
