Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the issue of adaptation of the Medieval Cyrillo-Methodian tradition to the requirements of modern national Bulgarian discourse. The author goes beyond the limitations of discussion within the history of idea research sketched to date on the Bulgarian ground. By referring to the formation process of the idea of Bulgarian writing origins created by Saint Cyril for the purpose of his mission in the Morava region, the author shows its connections to the idea of Bulgarian cultural missionarism. The latter idea, developed in the period of national revival, at the same time found its reverse in the myth of burnt books. The article attempts to interpret the cognitive dissonance born as a result of these contradictions. According to the author the dissonance reveals crucial dilemmas accompanying the transformation of Bulgarian culture in the 19th century from oral into written one.
