Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the way I.L. Caragiale’s work managed to survive during the communist period in spite of the attempts made by the regime to alter its original message. In the first part of the article, we discuss the different approaches to Caragiale’s work, pointing out the exaggerations that occurred in the communist analyses, as opposed to the objective interpretations that can be found abroad, in the stands taken by Monica Lovinescu, Eugen Ionescu and other Romanian writers of the exile. The second part of the article deals with irony, the undeniable mark of Caragialism, seen by certain Postcaragialian writers as the most efficient weapon of unleashing the truth when telling it directly would have disastruous consequences.
