Summary/Abstract: The author offers a framework of analysis for Millʹs Utilitarianism based on game theory, able to capture all the nuances of Millʹs thought: that it is irrational to ignore the collective point of view, that it is better to keep to the rules than to try to perform the act that will have the best consequences etc. He believes that Mill would have welcomed this game‐theoretical approach, although the problem of justice needs further arguments. Contrary to the static, solipsistic, exclusively future‐oriented standpoint of the classical economists, we are forced, by re‐thinking the case of utilitarianism, to recognise that rationality is dynamic, leading us to take a longer temporal and wider personal view of what is involved in the decisions we are called on to take.
