Summary/Abstract: In order to justify the idea of free thought as a core principle of liberalism one must consider both the epistemology and the political philosophy of John Stuart Mill. He refers to free thought as thought ruled by its own principles and by nothing else and the condition of the rationale assurance that it can give to the individual is that of the completely free dialogue. The liberty of discussion is the principle that justifies the legitimacy of individuality but the objectivity of free thought is still an issue to be addressed.
