Summary/Abstract: This study aims to provide a survey of periphrastic aspectual constructions in contemporary European Portuguese. Research was initially conducted on periphrastic constructions in the two main Portuguese corpora, the CETEMPúblico and the Corpus do Português, and was subsequently followed by a semantic analysis. The study considers periphrases rendering phasis. Our classification is based on the model proposed for Spanish by Bohumil Zavadil, elaborating on the concept of Eugenio Coseriu and Nelson Cartagena. Periphrastic constructions are divided here according to their aspectual meaning into three basic groups: ingressive periphrases (including sub-groups rendering imminent, dispositive, initial, and inceptive meaning); global or partial durative periphrases (including sub-groups rendering actual, retrospective, prospective, continuative, persistent and distributive meaning); and terminative periphrases (rendering cessative, egressive, conclusive, finite and consummative meaning). Altogether, 60 different verbal periphrases have been investigated and classified in the study.
