Summary/Abstract: The future of the European Union as a political project is at risk. Yet the rise of far right and far left parties in Europe is only one factor eroding the EU. Indeed, the rise of radical parties is a worrying sign, but not a new phenomenon. Moreover, it is the knee-jerk reaction of the mainstream forces to the electoral successes of the radicals that creates a pathological effect on European politics.
