Summary/Abstract: Five nations in Central Asia emerged from the rubble of the Soviet Union, only to enjoy the briefest of flirtations with political diversity. Throughout the 25 years since Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan gained independence, jailing political opponents has become a commonplace.
