Summary/Abstract: Chapter 1: The Problem of Love. The author presents different concepts of relationship between medieval life and literature and the role of courtly love in Old French verse romance. Since 1970s critics have suggested that the romance ridicules courtly love as frequently as it idealizes it, exposing it for what it really is: rhetoric, a deceptive guise for base sexual desire. Some critics have theorized that courtly love rhetoric not only disguises the romance’s degradation of women, but that it naturalizes violence against women by aestheticizing it. The author argues that the performative intent of the language of love is the most important feature of the genre’s love episodes and that medieval conceptions assume that the applications of emotional regimes influence and alter the experience of emotions individual believe to be spontaneous.
