Summary/Abstract: The article presents the literary portraits of several iconic Russian characters written into the canon with “labels”: “seducer”, “enticer” and “tempter.” The author attempts to implement the interpretation of these characters, recalling the opinion of V. Shklovski that “Russian literature is devoted mainly to love failures.” Pechorin, Anatole Kuragin, Nehlyudov, Gurov (with some reservations) and the Wizard of Nabokov are chosen for this analysis as the embodiment of different ideologies and ideas about the function of the artistic image. Direct and typological connections between authors are revealed. The differences between them are also explored – L.N. Tolstoy is concerned about the morality of Russian society, but for V.V. Nabokov the magic of a writer is the most important thing.
