Summary/Abstract: The problem of regeneration after the Second World War concerned the cities and their inhabitants for the first time on such a large scale. A lot of cities required almost complete reconstruction. It is estimated that the city fortresses (Wrocław, Elbląg) suffered approx. 50-90%, and the city without a strategic function in about 30-40%. The cities were virtually uninhabitable. There were different ideas and possibilities for their revitalization. Methods for reconstruction and development of old towns were at that time different. A small number of the city were reconstructed. Another way was the recostruction in the historizing forms. Another method was retroversion. Drawing from the historical architecture and its regional, local features a qualitatively new development was created. At a later stage refilling cavities with contemporary forms began that resembled other buildings with only a cubic volume and “the rhythm of the façade”.
