Summary/Abstract: Traditionally, the analysis of modality in Latvian is mainly concerned with the mood system, and partly with the observation of some modal verbs; affirmation or negation of the predicate in different moods is not the object of discussion. Therefore, it is important to discuss the relations between negation and modality in Latvian theoretically and practically. The analysis of the negated mood forms in Latvian shows, however, that in general negation and modality function separately. However, in the phrases of politeness, if they are expressed by the negated verb in the conditional mood, can the interdependence of modality and negation be observed.
