Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to overview what has up to now done in Latvian linguistics when analyzing dialogue and its units in spoken text, as well as to stress how Jūlijs Kārkliņš’ approach has been facilitated the research on dialogue. According to the separation of language and speech performed by Saussure, in the theory of syntax the simple sentence is considered to belong to language and is investigated in a static aspect contrary to the utterance belonging to speech and being analyzed in a dynamic aspect. In Latvian linguistics, Kārkliņš was the first to use this approach when he recognized language and speech to be objects of investigation of syntax.Special attention is given to the new edition of Latvian Grammar for in this respect it is based on methodological novelties, among them being the introduction of examples taken not only from written but also from spoken texts to illustrate the theory. Latvian Grammar did not succeed to include a subchapter on dialogue in spoken text; nevertheless this notion is mentioned 22 times in it. The present article shows that analysis of dialogue gives an opportunity to make considerations about the usage of language units in dialogue as well as about specific features of dialogue itself. At the end of the article future tasks are highlighted in the research of dialogue in spoken text.
