Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the activities of the Kaunas Musical Society at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. An attempt is made, at least in part, to evaluate the place this society takes in the Lithuanian music history and to describe the range of its cultural ability in the predawn of the Lithuanian national music spread. The publication reveals new facts of Lithuanian musical life at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and gives a particularization of the already published ones, with reference to the context which is as detailed as possible in the factographic and generalizing aspects. The literature that was scarcely studied is used. Scientific research methods such as historiographical, comparison and synthesis are applied. It is stated that the Kaunas Musical Society was a particularly characteristic part of the multinational Lithuanian musical culture of various professional experiences and aspirations of the 19–20th centuries. It united inhabitants of Kaunas and Kaunas province from various social layers and differed in its cultural aims from the democratic societies that cherished national music. A relation is shown between the Kaunas Musical Society and the musical culture of the twenty-year Independence period.
