Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes themes of writing and authorship in F. M. Dostoevsky’s novel The Poor Folk with an overview of N. V. Gogol’s short stories „The Overcoat“, „Diary of a Madman“ and A. D. Sinyavsky’s „The Graphomaniacs“. It aims to demonstrate the direct or indirect connection between the heroes of the aforementioned titles and sentimentalism, between sentimentalism, bureaucracy and graphomania as displayed by these texts, and it also attempts to illuminate (un)successfulness in authorship in the case of Makar Devushkin
