Summary/Abstract: This article briefly sketches the literary art of Hermann Burger (1942–1989), one of the most original and controversial German-Swiss writers. It then goes on to focus on his much-discussed Tractatus logico-suicidalis (1988) in which, a year in advance, the writer announced his suicide; this provoked extreme outrage amongst literary critics. Burger’s Tractatus is analysed with particular reference to Jean Améry’s essay Hand an sich legen but at the same time draws attention to the autobiographical background to this work which, in spite of everything, is intensely human.
