Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the examination of motivation and its impact on language learning. Its primary goal is to determine the relationship of motivation and the process of learning a foreign language theoretically and empirically. The theoretical part describes selected theories about motivation from a historical and current perspective, types of motivation and motivation in connection to teaching and learning a foreign language. Based on this theoretical analysis we have drawn variables that stand out as potential predictors of successful language learning. The predictors are analyzed theoretically and empirically. The empirical part is focused on statistical processing of data collected at Slovak grammar schools in Prešov district. The analysis is based on identifying correlations between several independent variables (general motivation, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) and one dependent variable (the level of language learning success). The data were collected via questioning and scaling methods. The results confirmed the assumed hypothesis that general and intrinsic types of motivation serve as predictors of successful language learning. Other results revealed that extrinsic motivation does not have a significant impact on this success. These results are in comparison to other foreign studies largely similar.
