The Balance of Individuals and Society, of Present and History. About Biographical Research and Biographical Work

Summary/Abstract: A lot of humanities and socials sciences focuses on “experience” of individuals and social groups as a central category. In this context researches are relevant which analyse biographical sources of people, especially interviews and autobiographies. Every biographical narration is in retrospect and an interpretation; frequently biographical researches expose biographical texts as “wrong” or “dissonant”. In contrast a biographical work assists people who want to arrange their life – because of an actual crises. They can develop new forms of dealings “in society” with the aid of biographical methods. Two examples of biographical work in Vienna are presented: occupational orientation seminars for young academics and a life-history-circle in an old people’s home.
