Mixed Marriages Between Bulgarians and Slovaks

Summary/Abstract: In this article the author analyses the social experience of mixed marriages and the formation of transnational family relations between Bulgarians and Slovaks. Subjet to discussion are the possibilities and constraints confronting both partners, living in a mixed marriage. This text is an attempt to find an answer to a few basic questions: what makes up the specific family space in a mixed marriage between Bulgarians and Slovaks; how the relations between the sexes are organised; how the family members communicate and interact within and outside their ethnic boundaries. The author quotes field research interviews and life stories of Bulgarians and their Slovak partners in marriage. She tries to draw a more general picture of the mixed families, proceeding from individual experiences.
