An Analytic Overview Of The Process Of Establishing The Diplomatic Relations Between Albania And The United States Of America (1922-1926)

Summary/Abstract: The Albanian-American relations were strongly based on a historical affinity which dates back to the arrival of the first Albanian emigrants to the USA at the end of the 19th century. From this experience the Albanian diaspora understood the sense, power and international position of the USA, and was made aware of the importance that this Great Power had for the fate of its mother country. Albania had constantly attracted the attention of the Great Powers with its strategic geographic position and its natural resources. This had also incited the greed of its Balkan neighbors, a fact that had become more obvious during the First World War. The threat of losing Albania’s independence and/or parts of its territory made Albanians to need and seek the US support more than ever before considering that this Power had not been involved in the Secret Treaty of London. The American attitude towards this issue resulted crucial for the fate of Albanians and at the same time gave hope for the establishment of good diplomatic relations between the two countries once history would offer the appropriate time for it. The economic interests that the US had in Albania, the endeavors of the Albanian government and moreover those of the diaspora across the Atlantic, all this intertwined with the American idealism led to the recognition of the Albanian government and the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Albania and the US in 1922. In this context, the first US Minister in Albania, U.Grant-Smith, arrived in December 1922. The process of developing diplomatic relations between the two countries ended in 1926, due to a lack of political and financial stability in Albania, with the opening of the Albanian consulate in America headed by Faik Konica.
