Summary/Abstract: The currently celebrated 50th anniversary of the end of the Second Vatican Council is an opportunity to to revive the debate surrounding this most important event in the history of the Church of the 20th century. The congregation itself, as well as the adopted documents ,e certain whole, together with the following period of postconcilium.Three questions appear to be crucial for the description and understanding of what happened then, which has had its effects in the Church today. Firstly, the reception of the Council, the mistaken formula of which established the distinction between the pre- and post-conciliar Church. Its periodization includes the following three stages: enthusiasm, disillusionment and balance (synthesis). Secondly, the cha-racter of the Council, which focuses the discussion on the nature of the Council: highlighting its pastoral value unfairly detracts from its doctrinal importance. And thirdly, the hermeneutics and the dispute between the ideas of continuity and dis-continuity.Meanwhile, the proposal of the „hermeneutics of reform” should be regarded as appropriate. However, a proposal for theoretical reflection cannot substitute the necessity of returning to documents, which should be studied, commented upon and transferred into the context of the Church’s life.
