Summary/Abstract: The article means to probe the way we understand the meaning of higher education nowadays and to focus on the possible, and desirable, contribution the humanities are called to make to academic instruction in all fields. It starts by urging all parties involved to consider what an educated person is and to set this as the primary goal of teaching and learning at this level. It then goes on to outline the value and influence of a humanistic education starting from its beginnings in the Renaissance, and ends by considering whether a rapprochement between the scientific and the humanistic disciplines today could not only prove beneficial to both as far as research is concerned but also, and most importantly, provide the solid foundation of a real, lifelong higher education for a university’s graduating students.
