Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with derivation, composition and inflection in Albanian. The data, which are examined in comparaison to the equivalent data of Italian, reveal that Albanian is a language which shows two different word formation processes: derivation and composition. Derivation is obtained by addition of affixes, both prefixes and suffixes, to a lexical base. Some suffixes and prefixes are free in their combining possibility since they are applicable to different lexical bases. Other obey certain rules and restrictions. This process, which combines affixes and bases into single words, is governed by word formation rules, conditions imposed by affixes to their bases to form correct words. Composition is obtained by relating a set of two independent bases to form new words. In Albanian, all the lexical categories (Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Prepositions, Adverbs) can combine to form new words. Albanian compounds are lexicalized, then they function as single words. Derivation and compounding are two important devices for forming nouns from nouns or from other lexical categories. They are two important ways of creating new lexical items. Inflection is a process which attaches suffixes that encode grammatical notions of gender, number, definiteness and case to nouns, pronouns and adjectives and grammatical notions of mood, tense, aspect and voice to verbs. Although Inflection resembles Suffixation, these two processes are very different since the flrst does not create new words. In Albanian, derivation, composition and inflection are all particularly productive. I.
