Summary/Abstract: The course of life of the Lithuanian painter, graphic artist Algimantas Švėgžda (1941–1996) was exceptional. In Lithuania, in the 1970s he was an acclaimed artist, an active member of LSSR Artists’ Union, although in his paintings, mostly figure compositions, he advocated photorealism which was unusual to Lithuanians. In 1982 he fell ill with a kidney disease and went away to East Germany for permanent treatment. In about 1986, Švėgžda started participating in exhibitions where he showed completely different works. They mostly were drawings and carvings, distinctive “metaphysical” still-lifes that contained scattered, accidental compositions of thoroughly drawn natural objects in an undefined space. In the article, an attempt to reconstruct the poorly researched period of his first years in East Germany is made, because it was the time of cardinal changes in his thin-king and creative work, life’s challenges and artistic experiments for the painter. The main source of this research is Švėgžda’s diary of 1984–1985, preserved in the archive of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, in which everyday life of the convalescent artist, “art with life” in the resort town of Prerow is depicted.
