Summary/Abstract: The first part of the paper makes some important clarifications on the concept of non-governmental organizations, highlighting that it is very difficult to distinguish between different types of NGOs because the boundaries between them are vague. Some concepts and theories on motivation formulated by contemporary authors are also mentioned. In the second part, the paper presents the result of the interviews conducted in order to identify the ways to motivate volunteers, employees or members from non-governmental sector. A comparison between the motivational theories in the literature and the research findings is also made in order to see if there is an evolution over time.
