Leading a Development Team - First Step to PSP/TSP for Master Degree Students in IT Project Management - Classroom Experience

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents author’s experience in teaching “Leading a Development Team” course of the Software Engineering Institute of the Carnegie Mellon University (USA), as part of the curriculum of the Master degree program “IT Project Management” at the New Bulgarian University in Sofia. An overview of the students’ prior experience in project management and their programming background is made. The adaptation of the training schedule to the students’ class hours is discussed in the context of its effects to the students’ perception of the newly introduced concepts and practices. The author describes the difficulties faced during the training and draws conclusions about their causes. The course content is analyzed, highlighting the main concepts and areas that were difficult to present and achieve good students’ understanding. The midcourse homework and the final students’ exam results are presented and analyzed to give evidence for the level of knowledge and understanding of the course curriculum as first step to Personal Software Process and Team Software Process for Master Degree Students in IT Project Management in NBU. Lessons learned by the author are summarized. Proposals for improving the classroom experience and final students’ results are presented.
