Summary/Abstract: The study highlights the larger political context of Gabriel Bethlen's religious tolerance edict. In defiance of current views and practices (see e.g. the Thirty Years War), Bethlen promoted a worldview based on the idea of religious tolerance. This article argues that this stance was endorsed by a Transylvanian tradition and common sense.
